Building Community Resilience Program for Bywong & Wamboin

Resilience Program Logo

The Building Community Resilience program is about better connections between people and local neighbourhoods in Bywong and Wamboin.

These connections create a foundation for community safety, sharing knowledge and working together to support each other when times are tough.

Led by a local volunteer steering group with funding from Resilience NSW until June 2023, the program builds on two existing initiatives, Community Firewise Groups and the Greenways public walks program.

To support these initiatives and other local community organisations, the program also offers skills development and mentoring to help volunteers who may want to lead public walks, become a FireWise convener or to step up to assist the community in other ways.

This program is for people who:

  • enjoy a weekend walk and a chat on our extensive network of Greenways and/or
  • are interested in learning more about grass roots disaster preparedness and how neighbourhoods can work together to reduce risks, and/or
  • would like to become a community volunteer but are not sure how or would like some help to develop relevant skills and make connections.

We would also like to encourage:

  • new residents to the region
  • young people who would like to find others in the community with similar interests or to build confidence to participate in local groups, and
  • people who are elderly, vulnerable or live alone and are concerned about fire risk or would like some support to be more active in the community.

The Program is a Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund project through the joint Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
